You will meet with the Academic Writing Coach to discuss your various writing concerns:
Writing Support offers help with your writing via:
Writing Support is not an editing service, nor do we grade or judge your writing.
You can come with questions, ideas, assignment briefs, or drafts, whatever that can get us started!
Students can book in-person or online appointments with the Writing Centre, or come in for lunchtime drop-in sessions (no appointment needed).
In-person appointments take place on campus in the Library. You can book 30 or 60-minute appointments, depending on your needs.
You can bring anything, from assignment briefs to notes, drafts, and even finished assignments.
It is recommended that you bring your assignment briefs and/or drafts with you to the appointment in a printed copy or on a laptop screen for ease of reading.
If this is your first time booking, see Booking Instructions.
First time attending an appointment?
If this is your first time attending an appointment and you're not sure if you should prepare anything, here are some tips to make it easier for you:
- Bring your assignment briefs/instructions. This helps us set the expectation for the appointment. It is recommended that you bring your laptop, or a printed copy if possible, but if not, then make sure you have it ready on your phone.
- Once you get to the Library, locate the Tutoring corner at the far end of the Library near the window or check in at the Library front desk.
- During the appointment, the Academic Writing Coach will ask you a lot of questions to get to know your writing concerns, so don't worry if you don't know where to start.
Online appointments take place on Microsoft Teams. This type of appointment works great for when you can't make it to campus.
Online appointments are similar to in-person appointments in length, with the option to book 30 or 60-minute appointments.
When you book an online appointment, you will receive an online meeting link in the confirmation email as well the reminder email prior to the appointment.
If this is your first time booking, see Booking Instructions.
Drop-ins are great for when you only have quick questions and don't want to book an appointment, or when you can't find the time to book an appointment.
Drop-ins are usually 10 - 15 minutes/person and first-come, first-served, which means you only have to come to the Library, write your name on the waiting list if there's a line, and wait for your turn.
Drop-ins take place during lunch hour (12 - 1 PM) from Monday - Friday.
The Academic Writing Coach — Mia Le — is currently the only staff member and point of contact for the Writing Support service.
Mia has a background in Writing and Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art + Design where she worked as a writing tutor and editor for undergraduate students on their interdisciplinary writing projects. She is an advocate for writing as a communal practice that fosters creative and critical thinking — even though she procrastinates on her own writing projects more often than not. She finds writing bios awkward and would much rather chat with you in person or online.
